Before NMJC, Gutting coached basketball at Fort Collins High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, from 2011-2013. Prior to his high school coaching career, he served as the head student-manager at Colorado State University from 2008-2011 under Tim Miles, most recently the University of Nebraska – Lincoln men's basketball head coach. Gutting’s father Steve is currently a basketball coach at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Gutting was All-Conference honorable mention in 2006.

Overall, Gutting has been to the NJCAA National Tournament twice and has coached three NJCAA All-Americans: Jeff Newberry, Oklahoma State; Malique Trent, Hampton; and Isaac Bonton, Washington State. In his college coaching career, he has now helped over 35 players move on to the Division I level after junior college.
